Beloved Union Square Greenmarket vendor Millport Dairy chose to move into a permanent storefront in 2024 when regulations for selling eggs outdoors changed. The friendly face of this PA-based Amish farm is John Stoltzfoos, who travels into the city 4 days a week to man the shop, which now offers an expanded range, including seasonal produce, all sorts of cheddar cheeses, bacon and cured sausages, fantastic butter, shelves full of pickles, baked goods, and, of course, the eggs that they’re famous for. $6 for a dozen orange-yolked free-range eggs, sold to you by someone who can tell you all about the chickens they came from. What’s better than that? You’ll also find Pennsylvania Dutch specialties like scrapple, a compressed pork and cornmeal concoction that’s best sliced, fried and eaten with breakfast. Or a fresh, chocolatey whoopie pie, which some say was invented by the PA Amish. It’s hard to believe that we can live in New York City and still have access to direct-from-the-source delicacies from Amish Country without leaving the island of Manhattan.
