The aisles here are stacked high with ribbons and trims, many of which are deadstock vintage — inherited from the 100+ year-old Hyman Hendler. For those unfamiliar with this New York trim giant: Hyman Hendler, which closed in 2014, was highly regarded as the finest stockist of ribbon in the city. Like so many garment industry suppliers, this Russian immigrant founded business started as a Lower East Side pushcart and grew into a jam-packed storefront. A visit to Hyman Hendler was always a thrill — you never knew what you’d find in the stacks, which were diverse in range: delicious cotton grosgrain, silk moire ribbon, intricate jacquards, printed velvets. I vividly remember the day I went to buy a few yards of goldenrod grosgrain and found the store to be closed. Lucky for us, the experts at East Coast Trimming have carried on the legacy by generously sharing this immense inventory with the public.
